YOU may have heard of the “American Dream”, an ideal that has powered the hopes of Americans for generations.

It began as a belief that the US was a land of opportunity, and that anyone could achieve success through hard work. At times, the dream has referred to home ownership, a good job, retirement security or each generation doing better than the last.

Yet today, this concept seems to have greatly changed. As Time magazine pointed out, quite different from their predecessors , many Millennials (the generation born after 1980) redefine the American Dream as “day-to-day control of your life”. They “prize job mobility , flexible schedules, any work that is more interesting than typing, and the ability to travel”, said the magazine.

Home ownership, once the cornerstone of the American Dream, is becoming a smaller priority for this generation, as a new research released by US insurance company MassMutual noted. Meanwhile, nearly four in 10 Millennials choose travel as part of their dream. And entrepreneurship (创业) is a rising favorite, as 26 percent of Millennials cite self-employment as part of the dream.

So what has led to this huge change?

Many point fingers at the poor economy. “Contemporary young Americans seem destined to [face] a world stamped by ever narrowing opportunity and societal stagnation (停滞),” noted The Daily Beast.

“The rate of 16- to 24-year-olds out of school and out of work is unusually high at 15 percent. Many college graduates have taken jobs that don’t require a degree,” Time reported.

The Atlantic magazine worries that these difficulties may lead to a lost generation who are “unable to ever truly find their feet on the corporate ladder”.

Dan Kadlec of Time sees Millennials as resetting their expectations. “The [situation] is different for young adults today”, he wrote. “A true American Dream has to feel attainable, and many Millennials aren’t feeling they can attain much more than a day-to-day lifestyle that suits them.”

56. The article is mainly about ____.

A. how American youth today are trying to realize their dreams

B. changes in American youth’s beliefs about the American dream and the reasons for them

C. how the American dream has inspired Americans to achieve success

D. why the meaning of the American dream varies from generation to generation

57. According to Time magazine, unlike their parents, many Millennials in the US now consider ____ to be the American Dream.

a. home ownership        b. travel       c. a stable job          d. self-employment        e. a flexible schedule

A. a, b, d                  B. a, c, e         C. b, d, e             D. b, c, d

58. The underlined word “cornerstone” in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to ____.

A. basis            B. growth          C. purpose        D. balance

59. What has changed Millennials’ views of the American Dream according to the article?

A. A lack of confidence in themselves.

B. Their dissatisfaction with their government.

C. Fierce competition in the job market.

D. The discouraging economy and unemployment.

60. Dan Kadlec thinks Millenials’ new definition of the American Dream is ____.

A. understandable     B. negative         C. troubling         D. beautiful

LIVING in China, it’s very convenient for us to travel to neighboring countries like Japan and South Korea. Last winter break, my family and I decided to make a ski trip down to Japan. The flight took us about four hours, and we had to take three buses to get to our destination. The trip was a laborious journey, but it was undoubtedly worth it.

Upon arriving in Japan, the first thing that hit me was the cold, piercing (刺骨的) wind. As I stepped out of the airport, I was overwhelmed by the biting air that danced around me. The icy breeze that touched my skin sent a tingling (刺痛的) feeling through my muscles. It was snowing at that time – snowflakes singing, whirling, accumulating on the pavement, left a velvet carpet for the passengers to walk on, creating one of the most beautiful sites. I sank my feet into the thick layer of snow on the ground, as a soft and comfortable feeling enveloped me. Protected by my thick coat, muffler, gloves and winter wear, I danced around in the snow freely, letting all my emotions out.

We boarded a bus heading for Sapporo, a city near our ski resort. On the bus, I sat alone, examining the delicate snowflakes that plastered (粘贴) themselves onto my window. A cup of Starbucks cappuccino in my left hand and a good read in my right – that one-hour journey was certainly worthwhile. I was reading a Chinese novel, To Live (《活着》), a book that originally started out as a holiday assignment but later transformed into a life lesson. The book is about an individual who goes through many unfortunate events but still persists and convinces himself to carry on living. I’ve learned that no matter how hard life becomes, we should always continue pushing on, as anything can be accomplished with determination.

Skiing in Japan was absolutely exciting but challenging. We experienced our first snowstorm. The food was spectacular. Overall, it was an amazing trip!

VERA Wang, the queen of red-carpet dressing, didn’t go into the fashion business with stars in her eyes. She knew about its unglamorous (单调乏味的) side, the hard work and, especially, the risks. And she had plenty of doubts along the way.

But every time one person – and, she says, it really just takes one – figures out what she’s trying to express with a certain design, she’s reminded of the reason why she became involved in fashion, and why she’s still in it: there’s an indefinable payoff from helping a woman look and feel her best.

Wang, 63, was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in June 2020 at its prestigious awards show, often called “the Oscars of fashion”.

“To all the women and men I have dressed, thank you for your trust,” she said when accepting the award from her mentor (导师) and former employer Ralph Lauren

Her hit designs include the lavender (淡紫的) skirt actress Sharon Stone paired with a Gap shirt at the Oscars in 1998 and the crystal-waistband wedding gown that Chelsea Clinton wore in 2020. There’s rarely a Hollywood event or an A-list (重要的) wedding where Wang’s name doesn’t come up.

Wang also has two lower-priced lines. She’s developed a fragrance business and a home goods collection. And she even has a flower bouquet business.

Wang wasn’t always sure this would be her path. She studied art history at Sarah Lawrence College and was a competitive figure skater in contention for a spot on the 1968 US Olympic team. Her family wasn’t initially supportive of fashion as a career path, and although they had financial means, they didn’t back her at first. So she went to work as an editor at Vogue, and then at Ralph Lauren, before launching her company in 1990 as a bridal brand. She earned fame and respect through her hard work.

Her mentor described Wang as “a unique young woman filled with a rare passion for fashion”. “In all the years since, I have watched her drive, dedication and talent shape an entire world inspired by her own life – first as a bride, then as a wife and mother, but always as a strong and beautiful woman,” Lauren said.

65. What can we conclude from the first two paragraphs?

A.Vera Wang was eager to go into the fashion business because she admired stars a lot.

B. Due to her talent, Vera Wang has had a smooth journey in the fashion business.

C. Vera Wang wasn’t very clear about what she expected when she first went into the fashion business.

D. Vera Wang felt a sense of achievement when her work was appreciated by even one person.

66. By mentioning Sharon Stone and Chelsea Clinton in the fifth paragraph, the author intends to _____.

A. show Wang’s influence in the fashion business

B. introduce designs that shot Wang to fame

C. show the typical characteristics of Wang’s work

D. explain why Wang is popular at a Hollywood event or an A-list wedding

67. What other businesses does Wang invest in besides the fashion business?

a. the film industry       b. home goods collections c. the dining business     d. a fragrance business e. a flower bouquet business

A. a, b, c       B. a, d, e     C. b, c, d       D. b, d, e

68. What is the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?

A. How Wang developed an interest in fashion.

B. How Wang established herself in the fashion business.

C. What inspired Wang to get into the fashion business.

D. How Wang’s family’s attitude toward her career changed.

69. Which of the following best describes Wang according to the article?

A. Talented, devoted and determined.

B. Passionate, humorous and diligent.

C. Frank, ambitious and particular.

D. Smart, traditional and obedient.

D

When you think of the tremendous technological progress we have made, it’s amazing how little we have developed in other respects. We may speak insultingly of the poor old Romans because they enjoyed the orgies (狂欢,放纵) of slaughter () that went on in their sport fields . We may look down upon them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them condescendingly ( 屈尊地 ) because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don’t the spectators who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remains as blood-thirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungry lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of complicated arguments to defend sports which should have been banned long age; sports which are quite as cruel as, say, public hangings or bearbaiting.

It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men batter each other to pulp( 把打成浆状 ) in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Let us not cheat ourselves. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is completely hypocrisy (伪善的). People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they have been deprived of the strong pleasure of witnessing extended torture and violence.

Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally – admittedly with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen cooped up in cages, or public floggings ( 鞭打 )of any of the countless other uncivilized practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the grim forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly and unaccountably improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is shameful and unworthy of human beings.

70.Which of the following reasons for people taking part in violent sports is not true ?

A. It can bring people high rewards.

B. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence .

C. It’s mad and interesting

D. People are used to bloodthirsty.

71.Speaking of violent sports, the author _____________.

A. speaks insultingly of todays human beings

B. is highly critical of the Social welfare systems.

C. doesnt think highly of todays human beings

D. doesn’t think it essential to forgive old Romans

72.What is the main idea of this passage ?

A. Cruel and dangerous sports should be banned by law.

B. People are willing to pay vast sums money to see violence.

C. Two different attitudes towards dangerous sports are compared.

D. People are bloodthirsty in sports.

73.Why does the author mention the old Romans ?

A. To compare the old Romans with today’s people.

B. To give an example that human beings used to be bloodthirsty.

C. To show human beings in the past know nothing better.

D. To indicate human beings are used to bloodthirsty.

74.How many dangerous sports does the author mention in this passage?

A.  Three.            B.  Five.

C.  Six.             D.  Seven.

75.What is the purpose of the author in writing this passage ?

A. To show human beings can improve ourselves by banning the violent sports.

B. To prove we can improve the law by banning the dangerous sports.

C. To emphasize we must take positive steps to improve social welfare system.

D. to show law is the main instrument of social change.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

What does travel consist of? Answers can be as varied as worrying about your budget, trying new dishes at meals, climbing mountains and riding on crowded local buses. But to Mishana Khot, a US travel fanatic (狂热者), travel is “more than just a stamp in your passport – it’s a stamp on your soul”. On the travel website Vagabondish.com, Khot listed some ways that you will change after taking a trip. Take a look.

Travel reveals the big picture

Khot believes we may lose ourselves in our own lives from time to time. Sometimes “we can’t separate our daily existence from the broader perspective (角度)”, she argues. Travel provides a chance to get away from your routine. “It forces you to see your life from the outside,” she writes.

Travel makes you more adaptable

When you are on the way, chances are that you will deal with flight delays, slow buses, bad food, horrible accommodation and much more. As Khot pointed it out, “If there is one constant in a traveler’s life, it is that travel will throw up situations that challenge you.” You may have made the most detailed plan, but the next minute something just goes wrong. You’ll go through anger and frustration, but hopefully, you’ll learn to laugh at it and move on.

Travel makes you more grateful

Whether you travel from a big city to the quiet countryside, or vice versa, there will come a moment when you are grateful for all you have. “When you meet someone with one leg who is hiking up a hill, you will close your eyes for a second and say, ‘thank you,’” she said.

Travel forces you to interact with new people

During travel, you’ll be forced to interact with many, many more people than you’re used to. And sometimes you won’t even be able to use your first language. So just throw away your shyness – that won’t guide you to your destination. Go and interact with people. They’re an important part of the experience.

What is the author’s purpose in writing the article? (no more than 8 words)
