1. 引导时间状语，“当”，强调的是两个过程同时进行。

如：在经济学家们满足于他们的丰功伟绩的同时，环境问题已经悄然产生。

While economists are indulged in the complacent of their strokes, environmental problems has creeped up.

当公共设施建设越来越为政府增加压力时，监狱存在的必要性陷入了进退两难的局面。

2. 引导条件状语，“只要”。

While there is a life, there is hope.

3. 引导让步状语，“尽管”。

While的这个用法在剑4到剑9的阅读文章中高频出现，如：尽管我承认网络的广泛使用有问题存在，但我不同意这些问题不能解决。

4. 并列连词，表对比。

如：家长对每天的家庭作业普遍持积极态度，但孩子们却表现出了抵制情绪。
