A couple of years ago, Ashok Goel was overwhelmed by the number of questions his students were asking in his course on artificial intelligence. Goel teaches computer science at Georgia Tech, sometimes to large classes, where students can ask thousands of questions online in a discussion forum. Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to deal with the increasing number of daily questions from students.

4

When students feel confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to fade. Professor Goel decided to do something to improve this situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is based on the IBM Watson platform.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40, 000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustments and enough time, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions presented by students on the online forum. The name Jill Watson will, of course, change to something else next semester. Professor Goel has a rosy outlook on the future of artificial intelligence, believing it will be widely applied. 8.What did Professor Goel find in the online course? A.The course was too difficult for students.

B.Most students dropped out of his course.

C.Students’ questions were too many to handle.D.Assistants’ capacity made students unsatisfied.

9.What can be inferred about Jill Watson? A.She was easily identified as an AI.

B.She turned out to be a great success.

C.She was released online as the first version. D.She could answer all the questions correctly.

10.Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “rosy” in Paragraph 4? A.Hopeful.

B.Sensitive.

Cherry blossoms in Kyoto, Japan, reached peak bloom on March 26 this year — the earliest the event has occurred in 1,200 years of records. Why so soon?

According to records previously collected by Professor Yasuyuki Aono, Kyoto’s cherry blossoms had consistently flowered around April 10 to 17 for over a thousand years. The Washington Post reports that Japan’s most famous flowers have been trending toward blooming earlier each spring, with scientists blaming the phenomenon on increasing global temperatures. And this year, the peak has shifted all the way into the previous month. “The Kyoto Cherry Blossom record is incredibly valuable for climate change research. Even a slight drop or rise of springtime temperatures can be recorded by it,” research scientist Benjamin Cook said, noting that warmer temperatures typically mean cherry blossoms bloom earlier.

Cherry blossoms are influenced so easily by temperature that trees in Tokyo even bloomed in autumn after typhoons caused warmer weather in 2018. Meanwhile, Aono estimated that Kyoto has warmed by 3.4 degrees Celsius since 1820.While this year’s cherry blossom peak was Kyoto’s earliest in 1,200 years, this isn’t the case in other parts of Japan Tokyo reached peak bloom on March 22, which is three days earlier than average and the earliest date since 1953.

However, the global trend seems to be slowly pushing cherry blossoms into full bloom to earlier in the year regardless of where they’re planted. In 2019, scientist Patrick Gonzalez noted that the trend of earlier blooming seen among cherry blossoms in Washington was

“consistent with human-caused climate change.”

Cherry blossoms are considered in full or peak bloom when 80 percent of the flowers have bloomed, which usually occurs within a week of the first flowers opening. Elements other than climate change may also be involved in the early blooming. Gonzalez offered the warning that “no research has examined all of the factors, and it is a long way to go.” 12.How does the author introduce the topic? A.By stating a fact. C.By describing a custom.

13.What do Benjamin Cook’s words suggest? A.Cherry trees will die in cold weather. C.Cherry is sensitive to temperature change.

B.Springtime temperatures are falling. D.Early blooming also appeared elsewhere. B.By giving an example. D.By sharing an experience.

14.What can we learn about cherry blossoms from the last paragraph? A.The studies have covered all factors.

B.Further scientific study is still needed.

C.Climate change is the only influential factor. D.Causes of early blooming have been identified.

二、七选五

Leading a group of people can seem challenging, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you may think. 16. Here are a couple of strategies you can use to be a reliable team leader.

Ask questions to get to know your team. You can’t truly be a successful leader if you don’t know your team. 17. For instance, you can ask your group members some personal questions like, “Do you enjoy doing these projects?” and “Have you named your newly- born?” If your team feels like you genuinely care about them, they’ll be more likely to like and respect you as a leader.

18. Be as honest and open as you can with them. Gone are the days of managers and bosses keeping a wall of privacy. Tell them what you’re thinking and what changes or new projects you’re considering. The more honest you can be, the more your team will feel comfortable giving you their input and feedback.

Listen to the people on your team and avoid interrupting them. Allow the folks on your team to feel comfortable talking to you. Whenever someone on your team comes to you with a problem or even just to chat, maintain eye contact and listen to what they have to say. 19.

Stay positive whenever there’s a problem. It’s easy to immediately start thinking about the negative consequences when something goes wrong. However, that helps nothing. 20. Then, identify some of the negative aspects. You may find that the more you look at the positives, the more your team will positively react.

With these tips in mind, you can start the exciting journey of effective leadership! A.Doing so can make problems quickly solved. B.Communicate your thoughts openly to your team. C.Learn about their individual roles and personalities. D.Take a moment to consider potential good things first.

10

E.Find out the person who is responsible for the problem. F.Getting too close to your team will influence your authority. G.People want leaders they can truly trust and happily work with. 【答案】 16.G 17.C 18.B 19.A 20.D 【分析】

根据上文“Stay positive whenever there’s a problem. It’s easy to immediately start thinking about the negative consequences when something goes wrong. However, that helps

I received an invitation to make a speech at a writer’s forum in Orlando despite the fact that my last book didn’t sell well and was not well received by critics. I had just recovered from a serious illness, so my husband persuaded me that a holiday might be just what the doctor suggested, so off I went.

I was exhausted when I arrived in Orlando, but I managed to catch a taxi to my hotel and settled in. The next morning, I took another taxi to the shopping center to buy a few souvenirs for families and friends. Later I went to a cafe to have lunch, but all the tables were occupied. Then I heard a friendly voice saying, “You can share the table with me.”

I gratefully sat down with the old lady named Lisa and we had a happy lunch together. I told her why I was in Orlando. She asked me about my book and I said it was not worth mentioning. To my surprise, she had read my book. She said that she loved it so much that she had recommended it to her friends. She told me that I had talents and longed for my next book.

When we were about to finish the meal, Lisa asked how long I would stay and recommended the Disney World in Orlando to me, saying it was the largest one in the world and I couldn’t miss it. I already told her that I would stay for three days but I hadn’t hired a car, and hadn’t realized how expensive taking taxis would be from the hotel I lived in to Disney World. After a while she said, “My dear, don’t use any more taxis. I’m retired and it would be my pleasure to drive you wherever you wish.” I told her that I couldn’t put her to that trouble, but she brushed aside my protests. She asked me where I was staying and we said goodbye to each other. 注意:
