Several years ago, I was to employ a receptionist for my unit. Before I advertised for the position, Kris, another manager in my company, asked if I would consider an employee from his staff instead of interviewing new competition.

I was told that the employee, Judy, had been causing a number of problems both from a

work standard perspective and from a personal relationship viewpoint. It appeared from Kris’ description of this employee that she was having a lot of problems performing her duties, and had difficulties on a personal basis with her manager. After listening to his

explanation, what crossed my mind was that he wanted me to take a performance problem off his hands. Why would I want to assume anyone else’s problem? However, I decided that, because it is my colleague’s request, 1 would speak with this Judy privately before I made any decision.

After speaking with her for over an hour, it turned out that the performance problem appeared to result from working for a manager who never extended a good morning greeting, never gave a word of encouragement but was always finding fault. The result was an employee who was insecure, hated to see a new work day start, and who had thought about quitting every day before she went to work.

The look on Judy’s face, the trembling hands, and the anxious manner in which she spoke led me to believe she was being truthful. I decided to accept Judy to my unit. What started out as a shy, withdrawn and frightened employee turned out to be a productive and loyal employee I had ever worked with. Judy couldn’t do enough and was constantly asking for more responsibility. I was more than happy to give her what she needed — praise for work well done, respect as a person, and encouragement for anything she worked on.

24. Why did Kris ask the author to consider an employee from his staff? A. To help the author with his problem.

B. To give a chance to the best one of his staff. C. To spare his colleague the trouble of interviewing. D. To get rid of a so-called badly performing employee.

25. What is the author’s first reaction after listening to Kris’ explanation? A. He didn’t want to lake over the problem. Kris’ description.

Tea, one of the most common English drinks today, is a relative latecomer to British shores. Although the custom of drinking tea dales back to 3000 BC in China, it was not until the mid 17th century that this drink first appeared in England. The use of tea spread slowly from its Asian homeland, although Portuguese trading ships may have made contact with the Chinese as early as 1515. It was the Portuguese and Dutch traders who first imported tea to Europe by 1610.

Curiously, it was the London coffee houses that were responsible for introducing tea to England. One of the first coffee house merchants to offer tea was Thomas Camay. He sold both liquid and dry tea to the public as early as 1657. Three years later he issued a broadsheet advertising tea at six and ten pounds per pound, praising its virtues as “making the body active and energetic”, and “preserving perfect health until extreme old age”. Tea soon became a hit in the coffee houses, and by 1700 over 500 coffee houses sold it. By 1750 tea had become the favored drink of Britain’s lower classes.

In 1864 the female manager of the Aerated Bread Company began the custom of serving food and drink to her customers, who were favored with tea. Soon everyone was asking for the same treatment. The concept of teashops spread throughout Britain like wildfire, not in the least, because teashops provided a place where a woman could meet her friends and socialize without damage to her reputation.

Another custom is afternoon tea, which is said to have originated with Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, who launched the idea in the early 1800’s. Anna is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” in the late afternoon because of a very long break between lunch and dinner, which in fashionable circles might not served until 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea and a light snack. This fashionable custom soon

28. When did British people start drinking tea? A. At 3000 BC.

B. Around 1650.

D. No later than 1610.

C. AK early as 1515.

29. What can we know about tea sold in the London coffee houses? A. It was only served to the upper class in the beginning. B. It provided people with a new concept of healthy lifestyle. C. It gained popularity quickly among English people. D. It replaced coffee to become the most popular drink. 30. Why did Anna launch the idea of having afternoon tea? A. To socialize with her friends. B. To change the fashion in upper class. C. To bridge the gap between lunch and dinner. D. To deal with a social problem about eating habit. 31. What would be the best title of the text? A. Tea in Britain B. A Drinking Tradition D. A Bridge of Culture Communication C. The Origin of Tea Customs

By its very nature, technology changes at a fast pace and is making itself accessible to pupils and teachers. The future learning is about access, both locally and globally. Teaching and learning is going to be social. Schools of the future could have traditional students, as well as online-only students who live across the country or even the world.

The future of technology in education is the cloud. Teachers can use the cloud to set, collect and grade schoolwork online. Students will have instant access to grades, comments and work via a computer, smartphone or tablet.

School classrooms are going to change. Thanks to the cloud and mobile devices, technology will be used in every part of school. In fact, it won’t just be the classrooms that will change. will be our classroom. Students can team from anywhere and teachers can teach from anywhere.

The cloud can also encourage independent learning. Teachers could adopt a flipped classroom approach more often. Unlike the traditional model in which the teacher is typically the central focus of a lesson, students will lake ownership of their own learning. Teachers can put resources online first for students to use. These could be videos, documents audio podcasts or interactive images. All of these resources can be accessed via a student’s computer, smartphone or tablet long as they have an Internet connection. Rather than “being taught”, students can learn independently and in their own way.

What we must remember is that when schools adopt new technology and services, they must be evaluated way, as a school, you know if they are successful and what improvements you can’t expect staff to use new technology if they are not confident users or creators.

32. Why would schools of the future also have online-only students across the world? A. The development of technology provides possible access.

B. People both locally and globally are living a life at fast pace. C. The number of traditional student is on an increasing decline. D. A lack of teacher will force more pupils globally to lean, online.

33. Which of the following can describe the technology cloud used in future education? A. Practical and expensive. D. Timely and convenient.

B. Encouraging and students-based. C. Effective and time-consuming.

34. What does the underlined word “flipped” probably mean? A. Combined. C. Shifted

B. Divided. D. Limited.

35. What should be done when schools adopt new technology and services? A. Stall performance evaluation. c. Creative thinking training.
