Talking on a mobile phone is expensive, so a lot of people send text messages. Text messages are much cheaper than talking on a mobile phone, and you can make it even cheaper by shortening the words that you use. You can do this by taking out ”unimportant” words(usually vowels) and using numbers instead of words (2 =to, 3=free, 4 = for, 8 = ate, so ha8=hate, etc.). You can also avoid using punctuation like inverted commas. Here is an example:

Im hm nw, why nt gv me a cl?(I’m home now, why not give me a call?) What do you think these text messages mean? Whr hv U bn? Iv bn wtng hrs fr a cll. Do U wnt 2 g 2 th cnma tnite?

I gt a txt mssge frm my frnd. Shes hvng a prty on Strdy. Do U 2 cm?

Mobile phone users have developed a series of symbols to show how they feel. They are called emotions(表情符号), and there are some examples below. To read an emoticon, you have to look at it sideways.

For example, if you say something in a text message which is a joke, you can follow it with a smiling face. Like this : Why didt u call me? I\"m so sad.:-)

Here are some others. Can you think of text messages where you could use them? : -) laughing :-( sad :-< really sad :-V shouting, | - | asleep 8-| surprised \\-o bored

( )51.People use text message in order to _________.

A. play a joke B. play a trick C. save money D. keep a secret ( )52.Which of the following is NOT the way to make your text messages shorter

and cheaper?

A. Using numbers instead of words.

B. Using punctuation like inverted commas. C. Taking out “unimportant” letters in the word.

D. Developing a series of symbols to show your feelings.

( )53.When you know something unexpected happens, you can use _________in

your text message to show your feelings.

A. :-) B. :-( C. 8-| D. | - |

One day I got into a taxi and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane(车道) when, suddenly, a black jeep jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire(轮胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very

last moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.

I was frightened. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to the hospital.”

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck(垃圾车法则).”He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short, so

love those who love you and pray(祈祷) for those who don’t .

( )54.Which of the following is NOT true according to the first paragraph?

A. The writer went to the airport by taxi that day. B. The taxi driver stopped his car in time.

D. A car accident nearly happened on the writer’s way to the airport.

( )55.The underline word yelling in the second paragraph means _____ in Chinese. A. 道歉 B. 傻笑 C. 吼叫 D. 告别 ( )56.Why did the guy get angry so easily? A. Because he was in a bad mood.

C. Because he was badly hurt by the taxi

D. Because the taxi driver didn’t say sorry to him.

( )57.From this passage, we can tell that the taxi driver is _____.

A. silly and dishonest B. wise and friendly C. helpful but nervous D. modest and impatient.

Dear Kitty,

We’ve been hiding in the “Secret Annexe” for a whole year now. You know a lot about our lives, but there is so much that I cannot tell you. To help you understand how different our lives are from ordinary(平常) times, I’ll give you a description of what happens on a normal night.

At nine o’clock, everyone gets ready for bed. Everything has to be moved around. Chairs are moved and blankets are pulled out. I

sleep on a little couch. It’s not very long, so a chair is used to lengthen(加长) it. When Peter is finished, it is my turn to wash and clean my teeth. At nine thirty, I finish washing and remove all of my things from where we wash. At ten o’clock, the lights are turned off. For the next fifteen minutes, the only sound is the squeaking of beds as people turn from side to side. At eleven thirty, I hear the bathroom door squeak, and then Dussel comes in to get ready for bed. He always stays up late to work. At three o’clock, I have to get up to use the toilet. I then lie awake for a while trying to get back to sleep. The sounds of Dussel gasping and groaning in his sleep often keep me awake at this hour. From time to time, gunfire wakes everyone up between the hours of one and four. I usually grab(抓起) my pillow(枕头) and slippers and hurry to Daddy’s room when this happens. At a quarter to seven, the alarm clock goes off and by a a quarter past seven, everyone is up and ready to begin a new day.

( )58. How long has Anne been hiding in the “Secret Annexe”? A. Half a year. B. One year.

C. More than one year. D. She doesn’t tell Kitty. ( )59. Who is probably the last one to wash before going to bed? A. Kitty. B. Anne C. Dussel. D. Peter.

( )60. How does Anne feel between the hours of one and four when gunfire is

heard?

A. Scared. B. Comfortable. C. Pleased D. Relaxed. ( )61.Anne tells Kitty what happens on a normal night because _____________.

A. Kitty knows nothing about her life.

B. she wants to share with Kitty her happy life there.

C. she asks Kitty for help because their lives are difficult. D. her life there is quite different from ordinary times.

Is your TV connected to the Internet? What about your chair or your fridge? Probably they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected, thanks to the so-called \"Internet of things\".

The Internet of things may be coming sooner than you think. Earlier this year, Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of things. He said that five years from now, every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of things, no matter whether it's a remote control or a washing machine.

So, how do household(家用) objects that are part of the Internet of things work? Well, think of a common chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows that the user has just walked into the room and is feeling cold.

An Internet-connected camera could help people feel safer in their homes. It can know people's faces and has an infrared sensor(红外传感器), so even if it’s dark, it can see when someone passes by and send you a message on your smartphone to let you know who's there. If the person is someone you don't know, it can tell you that, too.

But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food bowls or security systems to the Internet, there may be some problems. For example, many early connected-home objects don't have much built-in security, which means they could be hacked(被黑客攻击). Moreover, it could be difficult to get these machines to work together especially when they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, which had 45 members by late 2014.

So, picture this: you enter your home. The temperature changes to make you feel comfortable. Your favorite music starts playing for you. Do you think that this would be a good thing? It may happen sooner than you think.

( )62. What does the article mainly talk about?

A. Advantages of living with the Internet. B. Disadvantages of living with the Internet. C. The coming “Internet of things”. D. The impossible “Internet of things”.

( )63. Which of the following can support the idea “ how will household objects

connected to the Internet work?”

A. A warm chair connected to the Internet. B. Dog food bowls connected to the Internet.

C. A remote control made by the Samsung Company. D. An Internet-connected camera with an infrared sensor. ( )64. Paragraph 5 is manly about ______________.

A. the possible problems of the “Internet of things” B. the problems with early connected-home objects

C. how to get different new machines working together D. how to solve the “Internet of things”problems

( )65. Which of the following words best describes the writer’s tone(语气) in the
