Being Sick Is No Fun At All
Last month, I got really sick and had to stay home from school for over a week. It was not fun at all! I caught a bad case of the flu that made me feel terrible. This is my story about being sick and what I learned from the experience.
It all started on a Saturday morning. I woke up feeling dizzy and my throat was super sore. My nose was all stuffed up too. I didn't have much energy and just wanted to lay around. Mom took my temperature and I had a fever of 102 degrees! She said I definitely had the flu and couldn't go anywhere until I felt better. The first few days were the worst. My whole body ached and I spent most of the time sleeping. Whenever I was awake, I just laid on the couch watching TV or reading books. I couldn't keep much food down either. Mom made me soup and Popsicles, but even those were hard to eat at times. I missed hanging out with my friends and going to school. Being sick is so boring! After about three days, the fever went away but I still felt really weak. I started getting a bad cough that made my throat hurt even more. Mom gave me yucky cough medicine that didn't really help. I just had to wait it out. During this time, I fell behind
on my schoolwork since I wasn't in class. My teacher sent home assignments, but I could barely concentrate to do them. Math was especially hard when my brain felt so foggy.
Finally, after about a week and a half, I started feeling a little better each day. The cough went away and I had more energy. I was so happy when Mom said I could go back to school! I had missed seeing my friends and teachers. However, I was also nervous because I knew I was behind on a lot of work. I had to stay after school a few days to catch up.
Looking back, here are the main things I learned from my experience being sick:
Don't take good health for granted! It's no fun feeling crummy and being stuck inside all day. I realized how lucky I am when I'm healthy and able to go out, play sports, and do all my regular activities.
Listen to your parents and doctors. My mom reminded me how important it is to rest, drink lots of fluids, and take medicine when you're ill. If I tried to rush my recovery, it would have taken even longer to get better.
Stay on top of schoolwork. Even though I was sick, not doing my assignments set me way behind. Next time I'll ask for help if I'm struggling to keep up while home from school.
Have patience. Getting over a bad flu or any illness takes time. I couldn't just wake up feeling perfect right away. Recovering gradually is normal and natural.
Appreciate your health! After weeks of feeling crummy, I realized how good it feels to have energy, no aches and pains, and the ability to do everyday activities I used to take for granted.
Overall, my sickness experience was no fun at all. However, it taught me some valuable lessons about health, perseverance, and not taking feeling good for granted. I have a new
appreciation for when I'm feeling 100%. Next time I get sick, I'll know what to expect and how to have a better attitude. But I sure hope it's not anytime soon! Being healthy is way too nice.
