Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Working at home using computers or telephones is better than working in the office.

The global world of work has seen radical changes in recent years, among which telecommuting, or working from home, stands out as the most remarkable brainchild of this technological age. An increasing number of people choose to complete their work from home and communicate with their offices using computers or telephones. While this may seem like a better option for workers and their employers, there are a number of drawbacks lurking behind the benefits of this development.

A major disadvantage is that telecommuting blurs the line between your leisure time and your work. For most people who work in the office, they have fixed office hours, for example from 9am until 5pm. Anytime outside of that period, except for some rare occasions when they have to work overtime, is considered free time or family time. However, when people start to work from home, they may feel unable to escape their work or separate their life at home from their work. They may start to check their work email first thing in the morning, or they may work late into the night. And because getting to work is so easy without having to commute to the office, they may actually be working longer hours than their office counterparts.

Another disadvantage is that the quality of work may suffer because of the reduced face-to-face interaction with other employees or supervisors. An important element in the successful operation of a company is effective communication between co-workers. This communication is not simply making a few telephone calls or sending a few emails. It involves face-to-face discussions, brainstorming, persuasion or even arguments where innovative ideas and strategic decisions are created. This kind of work atmosphere can never be created in a home environment no matter how sophisticated the technology is.

Finally, once people start working away from the office, there is a decreased sense of working for an institution but instead an increased sense of working for a task or a product. Therefore, workers may feel less loyal to a company and more inclined to change jobs or work part-time or on contract, as long as it can provide reasonable pay and a flexible work schedule. Working in the office, on the other hand, often gives people a sense of belonging, a feeling that they are part of a larger group.

Apart from the disadvantages already mentioned, there are also drawbacks including loneliness, isolation, the initial high cost of setting up, domestic distractions and interruptions etc. Therefore, this modern, seemingly attractive mode of working is actually not as efficient and rewarding as working in the office.

Some people argue that one should choose more practical dream rather than challenging one because it is safer. However, as far as I am concerned, challenging dream can bring us more opportunities and help us to achieve success.

First and foremost, people can be inspired by challenging plans. As the old saying goes, one’s potential is endless. Nothing is impossible if we try our best. For example, Bill Gates, one of the most successful persons in the world, quit from famous university and chose a more satisfying career—to start an enterprise. Most people would think he must be crazy. Nevertheless, Gates has created the Microsoft Empire because he knew that there would be a huge market for personal computer decades ago. If he continued his study which seemed to be more practical at that time, he would hardly achieve such success.

In addition, when facing challenging plans, people always work harder. I believe challenge and pressure can bring out the best in people. For example, my father was born in a small village. He learned construction from my grandfather and wanted to be a building worker in the village just like my grandfather. After he went to Wuan, a big city near his village, he was attracted by the prospect of the city and so he decided to go to Wu an. He made up his mind to become a doctor in that city. After five years hard working and struggle, he opened a private hospital in Wuan finally. If he never went out of village, he would be just a country worker.

Last but not least, practical plans will prevent people from making breakthrough. The nature of people is lazy. When people satisfy with their current lives, they will never want to give up the secure lives. Years after years, it becomes harder for them to challenge themselves because they have already accepted what they are. My sister gave up studying aboard after graduation and chose a secure job at hometown. Now she got married and had a baby. Her life is not quite well since the moderate salaries. However, she told me that she has accepted her life.

To sum up, in order to have greater success, people should wait for satisfying jobs rather than accept the secure job right away. (387)

Agree or disagree? If child want to do well in school, parents should limit the hours of watching TV programs or movies。

The distribution of children’s extracurricular time has become the object for an intense debate among educators who are trying to find recipe for increasing children’s performance at school effectively. I disagree with the suggestion to limit the children’s time spent on TV, and I contend that the most essential problem lies in the education in itself which has scarcely emphasized children’s individual interest.

Less time spent on television doesn’t necessarily imply that children would concentrate any more on study. Children could still waste their time elsewhere, like internet and movies which similarly

- 2 -

distract children from their study and may consume more time than televisions. After all,

television programs are not as long as movies and usually less addicting than internet. Hence to restrict children’s television time may lead to worse scenarios where children are allured away by other activities doing no good to their study. Moreover, television has also merit in educating our children. People would instinctively believe that merely as a form of entertainment, watching television is useless. Yet for children who haven’t developed strong cognitive ability, rigid

teaching methods at school are not nearly as effective as initiative learning in recreation is. In this sense, forbidding children to watching television is not required to improve children’s school performance.

In addition, limiting children’s time spent on television is just scratching the surface of the issue. Our education system has put no heed to students’ individual interest and government interferes too much with discipline at schools. As a consequence, neither class nor homework could interest children. It accounts for why such policy must fail to invigorate children at school. Rather than limit children to watch television, we have a lot to do to address this issue, by which I suppose increasing financial budget is a must-do to expend the flexibility of courses, improve instruction quality and renovate education infrastructure. Government should guarantee that schools can afford more qualified teachers and expense of necessary education equipment, such as multi-media classroom, outdoor educational facilities and so on. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? If you need to discuss upsetting or controversial problems with others, Using e-mail/text messaging is better than using telephone/voice-messaging.

When I need to talk about a problem that might be upsetting, I prefer to use e-mail or text messaging to express myself. I have three main reasons for this preference.

First, I am an extremely sensitive person. I tend to see every tiny expression and nonverbal behavior as embodying special meaning. Even a glimpse of something can bother me for a long time. When I must communicate about something upsetting or controversial, I like to use e-mails or text messages so that I am not bothered by people’s reactions. If I cannot see how others are responding, I can remain focused on the problem and stay in the best condition to solve it.

Moreover, using written forms of communication such as e-mail and text messaging to discuss upsetting things allows people to pour out feelings that they are too embarrassed to state directly. At one time, I had problems with a friend in senior high school. He had helped me with

mathematics since we were freshmen. This became a problem when his girlfriend entered my class. In order to avoid his girlfriend misunderstanding our relationship, he stopped talking to me and broke off our tutoring. I fell into deep sorrow. I was aware that it was necessary to have a deep conversation with him; otherwise, I would lose a friend. However, the words in my heart were hard to speak directly to him. I wrote a three-page letter and told him everything I thought. The letter saved our friendship. After that experience, I understood that writing can help resolve

- 3 -

upsetting and controversial situations.

Finally, writing down ideas and opinions can be the best way to avoid conflict and

misunderstanding. When people talk about upsetting and controversial issues, they are easily excited and then easily become involved in arguments. Solving problems by exchanging opinions and ideas through written words can prevent conflict from happening. One of my neighbors once dropped a note to me saying that my bicycle shouldn’t be parked in front the driveway. The note was contained in a very lovely envelope, which was so sweet that I could not say no to his request, although it is a shared driveway and I have the right to park my bike there.

In conclusion, although we now live in a busy world where time is precious, it is better that we slow down and relax for a minute, think about what we are going say, try to write them down in words and then communicate the messages to others.(420)

有些人觉得他们可以靠自己或者家人的帮助,解决important problems.因此,人们不需要的帮助。 Disagree

Can people solve all problems by themselves and have no need to ask help from government? Some people argue that people can get help from their family members. However, as far as I am concerned, there are some important problems individuals cannot solve by themselves and government’s help is necessary.

First and foremost, when people get hurt from other people or organizations, we need laws to protect our legitimate rights and interests. For example, if we are cheated by others or if we buy fake goods, it will be useless for us to ask those bad guys to return the money back. The best and the only measure we can take is to issue them. Government has many powers that individuals never have. A lot of problems are too complicated for individuals to deal with.

In addition, even if individuals can solve some problems on their own, with the help of

government, they can solve the same problems better. For example, my neighbor Mr. Lee’s father was diagnosed of cancer last year. In order to save his father’s life, he used up all of his money. Even if he worked harder than ever, his family’s life was still rough. Nevertheless, after the

government granted him a loan, he could afford the expenses of his father and the family now. It is really a relief for him. The money is just piece of cake for government while for Mr. Lee it can save his father’s life and the whole family.

Last but not least, some issues are important to everyone, but nobody wants to deal with them. The public transportation and roads, for instance, offer everyone convenience. Nonetheless, nobody wants to cost money to build roads because they could hardly profit from it and prevent others to

- 4 -

benefit from it. Only government can handle these kinds of issues. Public health is another example to illustrate this point. When facing virus such as flu, individuals are vulnerable if government takes nothing to prevent the epidemic situation.

To sum up, People cannot solve important problems by themselves or with the help from their family members so it is necessary for the government to help them. (362)

版本1 Do you agree with the following statement? In a team, those who do not accept others’ criticism can not succeed.

There is no way one can avoid criticism from other people. Criticism is very natural as most people can see the world only from their point of view. Hence they are unable to see the holistic picture of the world and the need for diversity. If a person does not know how to handle criticism from other members of a team, he/she may tend to react negatively towards them, and his/her work performance is not likely to be successful.

While working in a team, you can not be sure that your opinions, decisions or approaches are always correct, and in many cases you will need to accept criticism from other members who will point out your mistakes and direct you towards the right course of action. In sports, for example, especially in team sports such as football or basketball, any one player, no matter how skillful or experienced this player is, will make mistakes during a game, sometimes even “deadly ones”. And when criticisms pour in after the game, from team members, the coach, or team fans, the best strategy is not to run away or find excuses to avoid these criticisms, but to listen to and accept their criticisms, take their advice, and try hard to improve the next time.

Other times, you may occasionally be misinterpreted, misjudged, and therefore unfairly criticized, but in a friendly work environment, these criticisms are often made out of good will. So in these cases it may be helpful that you listen carefully to what others say and try to understand their points of view, instead of reacting aggressively towards them, which may harm team relationship in the long run. I think we all have seen, in real life or on a TV program, a situation where two people started yelling at each other only because one thinks the other is intentionally finding fault. But often this is due to a simple misunderstanding or miscommunication. A successful team

player would first of all stay calm, summarize the other person’s perspective, then find out the root of such misunderstanding, and finally resolve the conflict.

Criticism, especially if it seems unjustified, can be painful and cause a defensive reaction, but a truly successful team player will face criticism with patience and professionalism, and turn it into a constructive force towards final success.(387) 8. 20100213NA

版本2 Do you agree with the following statement? People holding different views cannot achieve

- 5 -

success as a team..

Teamwork has become an important part of the working culture. Most companies now realize the importance of teamwork because in our modern world many tasks are becoming increasingly complex that they require a team with multiple skills to complete. But is it true that every member in the team should have the same opinion in order to achieve success? From my point of view, most of the time, a team consisting of divergent opinions are more likely to succeed.

As we all know, it is not practical to expect everyone in a team to have the same point of view, because everyone is a different individual who has his or her own personality and ideas due to different backgrounds. However, often such differences in opinions can be resolved after sufficient discussion and especially after coordination by a team leader. I once joined a football team back in high school. Every time before a football match, team members would sit together and discuss strategies in order to defeat our opponent in the next game. Often in such discussion many

different voices can be heard: Some members advocate offense but others emphasize defense. The team leader, the captain of our team, who is a very experienced football player, often played a very important role. He would make the final decision on team deployment, and his strategy always balanced offense with defense. Under his leadership, our team had won four championships in the school football league.

Furthermore, even if different opinions cannot be resolved, it does not mean a team will fail, because sometimes difference in opinions will lead to some bright thoughts and creative ideas. In a company, for example, the majority of team members, because of company tradition or routine, are often confined to a stereotyped view and they would tend to agree with each other passively. But the best ideas often come after heated discussion among team members, who hold different or even conflicting views. So they need someone different, someone who can say no to the old practice, to generate innovative ideas and achieve important breakthroughs.

In a word, having the same opinion or attitude to the issue is not a guarantee of successful team work. Indeed, we can learn a lot from the different views, as long as the team has a definite aim and is led by an experienced team leader. (394)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way to improve the quality of education is to increase teacher’s salaries.

Whether the best way to enhance the education’s quality is to improve teachers’ salaries? Most of people claim that to improve the finance of teachers doesn’t contribute to increase quality of

education because there are other ways to promote the educational quality. However, as far as I’m concerned, it is a much effective way to improve the quality of education through makes the teachers’ budget sufficiently.

First and foremost, satisfactory payment could serve as an effective engine driving people to strive for more excellent performance in their career. On one hand, the sense of satisfaction that obtained

- 6 -

from decent salary as well as respectable status could eliminate their tiredness and then their enthusiasm of working could be boosted. On the other hand, it is universally acknowledged that there is furious competition in modern society which ensues from job with adequate payment. And in order to maintain their position and even procure promotion in the near future, people must be overtime working and high concentration to achieve greater efforts. According to a recent survey that conducted by the Ministry of Education, there are 78.3 percent of teachers think that to make the higher salary is the most effective way to increase their quality on teaching. Therefore, to increase payment is an effective engine lead teachers to do better.

In addition, high payment could decrease their burden on the life of economic, and then it is also good for the teacher’s health, because high payment enable them to have less pressure from family, and it’s also unnecessary for them to find excess jobs to hold their family, such as home-teaching. Thus, they could have much more time on doing exercise. For example, they could use their free time on jogging. It is an excellent way for them to decrease the possibility of suffering to physical disorders, like obesity, hypertension and diabetes. So, teachers should have a good health condition to face their works, and then the quality of teaching would also increase a lot. Consequently, higher payment also contributes to teachers’ physical fitness.

Last but not least, there is another way to improve the teachers’ quality as well, such as to train them for a while. There is no denying the fact that to train teachers is also a quickly method to improve their teaching levels, because teachers could learn more skills in the courses, such as managing skills, leading skills and teaching skills. But it is also have some influence negatively, for example, when teachers took training class, they might don’t have enough time to work, and then their work experience would lose. Thus, to train teachers for a while is not the best way to improve the quality of education.

From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that to increase salary is the best way to improve quality of education.(475)
