Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks were taking many of their chicken. The
farmers didn‟t know what to do. Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help. “Kill the hawks,” the officials said, “We will even pay for them,” so the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks.
The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But they now had a new worry. Field mice were eating up a lot of the farmers’grain. How did this happen? Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn‟t know this. When they killed a lot of
hawks, they changed the balance. When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants. Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals can‟t find enough plants to eat, they will starve or have to leave the place.
In one part of the USA, for example the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild roses. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions and wild roses doesn‟t change much if people leave things as they are. But people killed many mountain lions in order to protect the deer. Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses. Then the deer began to eat the green leaves of young trees. These trees were important to the farmers. So the farmers thought of ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature.
To keep the balance of nature is important for us to remember.

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger, was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he make some money by selling his small but genuine of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ban Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To make less the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation .
Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.
In Spring's time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General \"Stonewall\" Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's economic problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eye experts the difficult task of separating this forgeries from the originals.
11. Why did Spring sell his autographs in England and Canada? A. There was a greater demand there than in America. B. There was less chance of being detected there C. Britain was Spring's birthplace.
D. The price were higher in England and Canada.
12. After the Civil War, there was a great demand in Britain for ___. A. Southern money
B. signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin C. Southern manuscripts and letters D. Civil War battle plans
13. Robert Spring spent 15 years ___. A. running a bookstore in Philadelphia B. corresponding with Miss Fanny Jackson C. as a forger

D. as a respectable dealer
14. According to the passage, forgeries are usually sold to ___. A. sharp-eyed experts
B. persons who aren't experts C. book dealers
D. owner of the old books
15. Who was Miss Fanny Jackson?
A. The only daughter of General \"Stonewall\" Jackson.
B. A little-known girl who sold her father's papers to Robert Spring. C. Robert Spring's daughter.
D. An imaginary person created by Spring.

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.①
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a
situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the eighteenth

Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from early nineteen hundreds. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to
3 grow long after your plants have died. ○
The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work
4 by agricultural scientists who had green thumb ○
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy. The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out

When asked about which is better for school students, the printed dictionary or the e-dictionary, different people have different opinions. Some like to use the printed dictionary, while others prefer the e-dictionary. As for me, I will choose the e-dictionary. The reasons for this can be listed as follows:
First, the e-dictionary is handy and cool to use as well as time-saving, while the printed dictionary is thick and heavy and not so convenient to carry. Second, although an e-dictionary provides less information than a printed dictionary whose entries are comparatively complete and detailed, we cannot forget that entries of the e-dictionary are addable, which I think, are enough for school students’ study. Besides, an e-dictionary has many other practical functions. It is also a calculator, a calendar, and a time keeper. Last but not least, an e-dictionary even teach the learner how to pronounce a word.
Therefore, based on the above discussion, it is not difficult to conclude why I choose an e-dictionary.
