On March 14, math and science lovers around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day. Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly. It is sometimes written in Green π. With the help of computers, mathematicians (数学家) have been able to calculate (计算) pi out to over a trillion (万亿) decimal (小数的) places, but there is still no end to the number. This makes pi confusing, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians.
Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the number pi.
For some people, the appeal (感染力) of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular culture. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to produce a sense of mystery, often the symbol pi is used,” says David Blatner, Jewish American writer of the Joy of Pi.
People also love trying to memorize the digits (数学) of pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Many teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The Gummess World Record for reciting the most digits of pi is held by Li Chao of China, who successfully recited pi put to nearly 67,890 decimal places.
Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pie and with fun pi-related games and activities. This year, Princeton, new Jersey, held a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.

In the past you could draw anything you wanted on a computer screen and then printed it out on a piece of paper—a flat piece of paper. But imagine being able to print something that is three-dimensional— 3D.
Would you like to design an object, such as a cup or a toy, and then “print” it out? Well, there is the technology to help you do this—to produce even a whole house!
3D printers might be the size of a suitcase, or even a small room, depending on the object they are made to produce. You make a 3D design on your computer and send it to the printer.
Inside the machine, the object you have designed is made as one object.
So how is this being used? In medicine, 3D printing is often used to make heath. The dential takes a 3D image, something like a photo of the real tooth and a new one is printed in that exact shape. Then you might also want to print a mobile phone cover or a special pair of shoes.
Scientists are taking this even further. They have made a bicycle that just needs a chain and two lyres (轮胎). Car pans (壳) have been made for a while and now they are even making a body of a whole car!
But imagine how printing a whole house might help people build houses. A Chinese company has made houses using a giant 3D printer. They use a mixture that includes concrete (混凝土) and recycled building waste. This is a good thing as it helps the environment. They believe that their method of printing houses is cheaper, faster, less dusty and less noisy than the ordinary (普通的) way that houses are built.
It seems that 3D printing technology will change our world, and China is leading the way. 33. The size of a 3D printer might be ______ according to the object they design.
A. changeable B. always small C. seldom big D. the same 34. In medicine, 3D printing is often used to print ______ in the exact shapes.
A. dentists B. teeth C. photos D. mobile phone covers 35. Scientists are taking this even further. Here “this” probably means ______.
A. a pair of shoes B. a whole car C. a new bicycle D. the printing
36. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. the introduction to 3D technology B. the advantages of 3D technology C. the history of 3D technology D. the influence of 3D technology

Jane slammed the door of the log cabin (小木屋) raced toward the Indiana woods. Mother and Father insisted that Jane go to school and learn to read. It was September of 1825, and Jane wanted to help on the farm like her brothers. Therefore, she told her parents “No!” and refused to learn to read.
Jane scooped (捧起) up her long skirts and splashed (溅起水花) through a small stream.
Running helped her collect her thoughts, so she ran for what seemed like hours. She dashed around a tree and wasn’t paying attention. As a result, she tripped (绊倒) over a pair of long legs stretched out in the grass.
The legs belonged to her neighbor, Abe Lincoln. Abe was leaning (斜靠) against a tree reading a book. He smiled, stood up, and extended his arm to help Jane up.
Jane recognized Abe and knew what a hard-worker he was. But she also heard he was not like the other sixteen-year-old boys in Perry County. Abe was different because he spent all of his spare time reading books.
“ Why are you running so fast?” Abe asked. “Are you hurt?”
Jane frowned (皱眉). “No, I’m all right,” she said. “I’m running because I’m upset. My parents want me to learn to read, and I told them no!”
Abe looked down at his book and then at Jane. “Reading can change your life,” he said quietly. Meet me here tomorrow, and I’ll prove to you how important reading is.”
Jane met Abe the next afternoon. He showed her a book about George Washington. One of his favourite teachers had donated it to him, and he had read it many times.
Abe began to read aloud while Jane listened carefully. He read about Washington and what a great leader he was. He read about Washington’s courage and bravery.
“Someday I want to be as courageous as George Washington,” said Abe proudly. “Someday I will be president of the United States, too.”
“I believe you will make a great president,” said Jane. “Look at what a good leader you are now. You’ve completely changed my mind about reading!”
Years later, Jane opened her newspaper and read the good news. Her friend, Abe Lincoln, had an elected President of the United States. She smiled and thought about the day she tripped over long legs. That was the day that changed her life.
37. Instead of going to school, Jane preferred to _______.
A. teach herself by reading books B. run through the Indiana woods C. give a helping hand to her family D. play with her neighbor Abe Lincoln 38. Jane changed her mind about reading, because ______.

A rain forest gets huge amounts of rain. That’s why it’s called a rain forest! More than 100 inches of rain fall there each year. In contrast, Los Angeles, California, gets only about 15 inches of rain per year.
Rain Forest Plants and Animals
A rain forest has hundreds of kinds of trees and flowers. Under your feet is a carpet of leaves. Moisture (水气) is dripping everywhere. Hardly any light reaches the ground because tall trees form a canopy (树冠), or upper layer, high above. It hides the sky and provides shade.
A rain forest is noisy! Bird squawk. Thousands of insects buzz and hum. Monkeys chatter in the trees. Beetles grow as big as your hand. Some frogs grow as big as a milk carton!
Why Are Rain Forest in Trouble?
Rain forests are very important to life on Earth. They recycle. Tree roots use dead plants as food. Rain turns into clouds that make more rain. Trees take in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and gives off the air we breathe.
Yet rain forests are in trouble. People cut down trees to get wood and land to farm. Most trees are not replaced. Many scientists think this may be a cause of global warming. Loggers also may leave rubbish behind. This is a kind of pollution.
The balance of life in a rain forest is complicated (复杂的). Plants and animals depend on one another. If one dies out, others do, too.
The Children’s Rain Forest
Children in a Swedish school were studying rain forests. They learned that rain forests were in trouble. The class stated a project to save a rain forest in Costa Rica. The class bought about 15 acres of land. They paid 525 per acre. The students hoped that the land they bought would be protected and not destroyed.
The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real river. They saw alligators (短吻鳄) crocodiles. A guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches on the trees and threw them at as.” One of the students said. “It was a great learning experience for all of us,” said Myers. This was the start of the children’s Rain Forest. This project works to save rain forest all over the world.

What will happen in 100 years? What will the changes be? Can you imagine? The population is growing faster. There will be more people in the world and they will live longer than people now. Maybe some of the rich can live on the moon. Hand-held computers will be much smaller and more useful and there will be at least one in every home. The Internet speed will be much faster. People will work fewer hours than they do now and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and traveling. Traveling will be much easier and cheaper. There will also be changes in our food. No one will eat meat every day, they will eat more fruit and vegetables instead. Work in the future will be different, too. Dangerous and hard work can be done by robots. Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.

With the rapid development of the society, many things around our life are changed. Personally speaking, my hometown has changed a lot.
When I was a child, there was only one black and white TV set in our village. And I don't know what's computer. I often went to school on foot. What's more, in summer, we had to use hand-made fans to make our temperature down. If I wanted to connect with the distant friends or relatives, the most convenient way is writing letters.
However, nowadays, there are four color televisons in my home and most people have their own computers. And now cars are seen everywhere. In addition, most houses have air-conditioners, which can cool the whole house quickly. With the development of mobile l phone, people can chat on QQ or Wechat.
As time passes, my hometown has change a lot thanks to the social
development. I believe there will be much more changes in the future.

It was difficult to tell who was who when doing an operation because the doctors and nurses wore the same suits, hats and masks.
To solve the problem, Rob Hackett, an anesthesiologist (麻醉师) in
Sydney, Australia, had an idea to write his name on his hat. At the beginning, his workmates didn’t take it seriously, even someone laughed at him, “ Don’t you remember your name?”
Dr. Rob showed his thoughts on the website Bored Panda, “As we all know, doctors are a stressful job, and
when facing life and death danger, we have to race against time to try to save
patients’ lives. We need to create a culture that allows us to rebuild health care. We need to develop a system that reduces mistakes and errors.”

Before we upload a photo of ourselves to social media, like WeChat, we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and give us longer eyelashes and fuller lips. With a couple of touches on our mobile phone, we’re able to get a quick fix and present the “best” pictures of ourselves to the world.
However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections(不完美) away, we’re also changing the way we look at our ourselves.
Last month, researchers from the US Boston University published an article Selfies-Living in the Era of Filtered ( 滤镜 ) Photographs. The article listed the bad effects of photo editing on people and the possibility to cause appearance worries.
The researchers think that these apps make it difficult to tell the lines between reality and fantasy. “These
apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article says.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of celebrities who were famous that time. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms, and their feelings are connected to how good they look,” a British doctor Escho told The Independent.
“Now you’ve got the comparison (比较) of your real self to fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor at Northwestern University, told the HuffPost website.
Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like.
So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the Beauty Cam?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good, I have my health.”
38. What may people do before they present the best of themselves on social media?
A. Using apps to edit photos. B. Smoothing their skin in the morning.
C. Wearing false eyelashes.
D. Redding their lips before going out.
39. Which is the opinion of the article Selfies-Living in the Era of Filtered Photographs?
A. People may have compared their looks to those of celebrities who were famous that time. B. Photo editing on people has bad effects and may cause appearance worries. C. We’re also changing the way we look at our ourselves.
D. For today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media
40. What does the word “fake” mean?
A.幸运的 B. 美好的 C. 伪造的 D. 快乐的
41. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this article? A. To advise people to care more about appearance. B. To advise people not to use apps on mobile phone.
C. To advise people to learn something more important than appearance. D. To advise people not to spend too much time on comparison with others.

I’m Dale Fox, your friend from the UK. This is a column where I help solve all kinds of TEENS’ readers’ problems. I hope I can help you with yours.
Question
Dear Dale,
I like reading English novels. My English teacher said it is a good idea to make notes in the margins (页边缘) of the books while reading. However, I
don’t like marking the books. I got in an argument with my mother over this. What should I do? Mikaze
Answer
Dear Mikaze,
We’re all brought up to believe that we should always follow our elders’ wishes. But sometimes,
our opinions don’t match those of our parents or teachers. When it happens, what should we do? When we want to get our point across to someone else, the best way to do it is to offer a reasonable explanation. This is usually the most effective way to get others to agree with our opinions. On the other hand, arguing is normally the worst way.
In your case, you should explain why you don’t believe in writing on the pages of books. For example, you may think that something so special as a book shouldn’t be written on. Or you might just think that it’s easier to write notes in a notebook instead.
Whatever the reason, if you present your reasons in a clear and wise way , your parents and teacher should understand your opinion.
As for the suggestion of making notes, your teacher makes a good point. Writing down notes while we read a book is a very good way to learn more about it.
However, you should find your own way to do this if you don’t agree with your teacher’s advice. You could download an electronic version (版本) of the book and make notes on your phone, or simply write your thoughts down on a piece of paper.
Anyhow we should listen to our elders’ advice and we ourselves can be wise as well. Dale

Let me tell you about a young boy who made a model car all on his own. The boy is me, six years ago when I was just 11. The car was small and simple, but in my imagination it was a high-speed racing car, speeding along the race road.
It was during the school summer holidays and workmen were building a new driveway and garage(车库) beside our house. It meant to add something new to our
home. When I watched the workman, I came up with an idea---I would build a car to drive into the garage in celebration of it. I told my mother and began with my plans. But I couldn't find the right things for making the car, so I gave up and sadly spent several days doing nothing. My mother noticed that I had stopped working and asked me why. I explained and she suggested that maybe I should change my plan to fit the things I had, rather than give up.
And that's just what I did. I found small pieces of wood in my father's workshop and made my car from anything that was lying around the house. When I found a small engine(发动机) from one of my old model planes, I added that. The power came from a battery I found in a box.
By the time the garage was finished, so was my car. I called my family together outside the house, started the engine and put the car on the driveway. It was fast, and I had to run to the garage to prevent it from hitting the new door. My family began to cheer and I smiled proudly. Thanks to my mother I learned the value of continuing to do things, especially something difficult. Soon I was making plans for my next project: a robot!
26. The writer was________ when he made the model car.

It is a question that has confused parents for many years: why do children refuse to eat greens?
Now, two American experts believe they have the answer.
After studying dozens of babies as they played with various objects, the researchers noted that they were far more unwilling to touch plants than other things.
They believe this is because evolution (生物进化) has biologically made children be wary of plants. Due to susceptibility (敏感性) to illness or injury in the early years of life, the body has designed an inner defence mechanism (内部保护机制) that limits a child’ s contact with plants, they think. The researchers believe this is why children turn their noses up when faced with a plate of broad beans.
The findings are published in a paper by Dr. Annie E Wertz and Dr. Karen Wynn, both psychologists at Yale University.
They wrote, “Throughout human evolution... plants have been important in human’s life. Yet, for all of these benefits, plants have always caused very real dangers.”
“Plants produce toxins (毒素) as defences that can be harmful, or even deadly. Some plants also produce physical defences, such as thorns (荆棘) can damage tissues (组织) and cause effects over the whole body.”
They added, “We predicted that babies may have behavioural strategies that reduce dangers caused by plants.”
To test their theory, the researchers studied how children aged eight to 18 months old reacted when presented with a variety of objects. It took much longer for children to grab plants; objects that were pretended to look like plants also caused a slow response time.
For parents attempting to spoon some peas into the mouth of their child, this finding should come as welcome relief.

At present, QR codes are widely used in China. It helps people get information
much faster, especially when buying things and opening websites. Besides, thanks to QR code, sharing seems to get far easier. It improves information spreading as well as cost savings. What’s more, no cash payment is becoming more and more popular because it is not only environmental friendly but also convenient for people to do some shopping. However, there are also some disadvantages. First, the QR code on the bills such as train tickets includes much personal information. In case of losing the bills, information may be easily leaked out. Second, easy payment may lead to unwise buying, which may cause waste.
In my opinion, QR code helps people lead a convenient and efficient life. We have to be wise and careful while using it, in order to avoid unwise decisions and waste.

Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea. But it could happen in the near future.
Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.
Scientists have been trying to grow organs (器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it’s a hard job. In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds (支架). But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.
Pelling, and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold. They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cell (细胞) to make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow. “You can implant (移植) these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive,” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.
The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly take over the pieces of the apple.
Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use. 56. Andrew Pelling is a scientist who studies .

Many people dream of travelling into outer space. However, spending too much time in space may cause health problems, according to NASA. That’s why astronauts shouldn’t spend more than six months on the International Space Station(ISS) at a time.
Muscle(肌肉) and boneless
In a weightless environment, astronauts don’t need to use their muscles to support themselves. Therefore, their muscles start shrinking(萎缩). To keep their muscles strong, astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day on the ISS. The weightless environment also causes astronauts bones to lose minerals, with density( 密 度 ) dropping at over 1 percent per month. The rate of bone loss for elderly people on Earth is 1 to 1.5 percent per year.
Sleep disorder(混乱)
In space, the sun rises every 90 minutes. It is hard for astronauts to get used to this light-dark cycle when they sleep. Also, they need to sleep in a sleeping bag that is fixed to a wall, which is uncomfortable. Astronauts now have individual sleeping pods(分离仓) that help shut out some of the light. Still, studies have found that most astronauts only sleep about six hours each night, even though they should have eight and a half hours.
Brain changes
Scientists have found that the position of the brain changes during spaceflight. It shifts upward within the skull( 头 骨 ). This can affect how the brain deals with how we see, stay balanced and move around. That’s why some astronauts can’t control their movement and balance after returning to the earth. Scientists have also found that astronauts may get used to this change after going on more spaceflights. But they still need to do more research.
36. According to the story, astronauts may suffer the following health problems:
a. bone loss b. sleep disorder c. mental disease d. muscle shrinking e. high blood pressure A. abe B. bcd C.abd D. bcd

Learning to live well
It seems that self-help books are topping best-seller lists more often these days. More people are turning to self-help books for advice on how to live their lives. Last year, sales of these books in the UK rose 20 percent, reaching a record high of 3 million, the Guardian reported.
Famous people or psychologists( 心理学家) wrote many of the self-help books. They teach you
how to deal with problems in your life—for example, how to get along with your classmates, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness in your daily life.
But can these books really help us with our lives? People have lots of different opinions about this. Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After she read more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website. Her site helps women succeed in the business world. “They(self-help books) can give you the courage to do whatever you want to do,” she told the Independent.
However, recent research by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that. Researchers surveyed two groups of people—one of the group had read many self-help books, while the other hadn’t. They found that people in the group who had read more self-help books have more stress.
There is no single “quick fix” that can make our lives better. However, it’s always good to know that help is at hand when we need it.

One year ago, you might have been impressed by the skills of the Chinese Navy soldiers in the film Operation Red Sea. Now, once again you may be amazed by the great a 71 that Chinese Navy has made.
On April 23, a big naval parade t 72 place near east China’s city of Qindao. The parade was held to celebrate the s 73 anniversary ( 周 年 ) of
the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy.
The PLA Navy sent out 32 s 74 and 39 warplanes for the parade-including some of China’s newest destroyers and submarines. But back in 1949, when it was founded in Taizhou of Jiangsu province, the Chinese Navy o 75 had 20 old ships in its earliest days. The last 70 years have proven that w 76 or not the PLA Navy has many ships or advanced weapons, it has always been a protector of the nations and its people. Actually, some of the things the soldiers did in the movie Operation Red Sea are based on things that the real PLA Navy has done.
In March 2015, a war broke out in Yemen. A Chinese naval fleet rescued 621 Chinese people, as well as over 270 people of other c 77 , from the area within nine days.
The Navy also fights pirates in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia. Since 2008, it has p 78 protection for more than 6,600 Chinese and f 79 ships.
Now the Navy is on its w 80 to becoming a “world-class force”, Xinhua said. And it will always be “a force for peace”. 五、书面表达(共 1 题,计 20 分)

A
Singapore’s language mixture
A new bus in Singapore is making headlines(成为新闻热点) for a strange reason. It is what is written on the signs inside the bus that has people talking. The signs are written in Singlish!
Quite different from the English we know, the signs read, for example, “Here cannot go in” instead of “You cannot go in from here”, and “Here can charge phone” instead of “You can charge your phone here.”
English is one of the official languages in Singapore. But the English Singaporeans use in
their daily lives is far from standard English and gets it the name“Singlish\". In Singapore, migrants(移民) from many countries, including China, India and Malaysia, all speak their own \"English\". The New York Times calls Singlish a “patchwork”(拼凑品).
For example, in Singlish you can easily find influences from Chinese. Singaporeans use Chinese sentence structures(结构) like “Toilet where?” instead of “Where is the toilet?”. They also add words like “leh” and “meh” at the end of a sentence to show their mood. This comes from Cantonese.
Though it may seem interesting, Singlish is worrying Singapore’s government. It thinks that Singlish may hurt people’s ability to speak standard English and make it hard for them to communicate with foreigners. The government even started the Speak Good English Movement in 2000.
But the movement didn’t seem to work very well, especially among young people. The youth think Singlish is
cool and a way to show they’re Singaporeans. Besides, many can speak both standard English and Singlish. “We are a nation good at code switching(语码转换),” wrote Cheryl Lu Lien Tam, Singaporean writer, in Time magazine.
25. The examples in the second paragraph tell us ______.
A. how English is spoken in Singapore B. how to speak English well in Singapore
C. why English in Singapore is different D. what to do to speak good English 26. From the third and fourth paragraphs, we know that ______.
a. English is an official language in Singapore b. Singlish is influenced by migrants
c. Singlish is good, according to The New York Times d. Chinese language influences Singlish most A. ab B. bc C. bd D. ad 27. What do Singaporeans think of Singlish?
A. The government is proud of it.
B. The government encourages its people to create more. C. Young people started the Speak Good English Movement. D. Young people like Singlish and think it’s cool.

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft(木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so 1
stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, 1 found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t crash. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.
We decided to leave at once. It’s all right living in a house for a lite while but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.
28. According to the story, which of the following is the correct order?
a. George saw a big house. b. George got some new clothes. c. George found Jim on the ground. d. George jumped off the raft into the water.
A. c-d-a-b. B. d-b-a-c. C. c-b-a-d. D. d-a-b-c. 29. Why did George Jackson answer “quickly” when someone called from the house?
A. George felt afraid and nervous. B. George felt tired and sleepy. C. George really wanted to stay there. D. George didn’t want to lie to him. 30. Which of these old sayings best fits this story?

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyle and even fight. Generally, they are often taking risks.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers(同龄人) view them-that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior?
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator(油门) but a weak brake(刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.
But the good news is that a violent(暴力的) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. They get more self-controlled.
31. What does the underlined word \"irrational\" in the second paragraph mean?
A. Quick. B. Crazy. C. Careful. D. Correct.
32. How does Laurence explain the influence of peer influence on teens’ behavior?
A. By using a metaphor(比喻). B. By giving examples. C. By presenting research findings. D. By performing an in-depth analysis(分析).
33. What can we learn from the text?
A. Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents. B. Peer influence is bad on teenagers.
C. Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up. D. Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends.
D
All of us feel down from time to time. Many of us have ways to cheer ourselves up and make ourselves feel better. This is referred to as “self-care”.
This idea comes from Japan. It refers to any activity that can calm one’s feelings, clear one’s mind, and comfort a troubled heart, according to China News Report. It was first used to describe the music of Japanese song writer Ryuichi Sakamoto(坂本龙一) in 1999.
Self-care is now popular in China as well. One of the most popular activities is “healing(治愈) travel”. According to Caissa Touristic, a Beijing-based travel agency, more Chinese tourists are going on meditation(冥想) or yoga retreats in places like Japan, Bali and India.
By taking these trips, people can learn more about local culture and the way people in these countries live. Without a tour guide or detailed plan, they allow their bodies and minds to relax. This way, they forget about daily stresses and noisy surroundings(周遭事物) back home.
Having a pet can also help. Research has shown that pets and humans can heal each other, NPR reported. Strong human-to-animal bonds(情感联系) make both pets and their owners happier and healthier. Last year Chinese dog and cat owners spent over 5, 000 yuan per pet on average. China’s pet industry now has a value of 170 billion yuan, Xinhua reported.
More people are seeking out self-care activities simply because they can finally afford to. With fewer worries on money, they can slow down and take a close look at their own inner world, The Paper noted.
34. What do we know about “self-care” from the story?
A. It means living by yourself. B. It started in Japan 20 years ago. C. It focuses on one’s physical health. D. It refers to activities that you do on your own.
35. People may feel “healed” while going on trips because ______.
A. they can do meditation or yoga during their trips B. they don’t need to make plans C. they get to learn how other people live D. they can relax and avoid daily stresses
36. According to Xinhua, which of the following is TRUE?
A. “Healing travel” is a popular “self-care” activity. B. Pets can help their owners stay mentally healthy.
C. Chinese pet owners spend a lot of money on their pets. D. Chinese people prefer to raise dogs and cats. 37. What can we infer from the story?
A. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music can make people feel better.
B. People who have pets are not necessarily happier or healthier.
C. The middle class experiences more stress and mental health problems than other classes. D. Chinese people will spend more money on their pets in 2019.

Wants are things you would like to have or do, but that you could live without, such as CDs and cartoons.

the things you really want. This is called a budget.

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do many things with. Sure, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.
No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time, they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, and then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends. If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制台), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years later, most new homes will have the systems(系统)that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today. I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How did I live without them?”

B. To explain more easily what the functions of the PIN and the console are. C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console. D. To let readers know how special his- house is.
44. The writer’s new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because ________. A. it has your favorite music following you B. you can make a telephone call anywhere
C. the writer is able to change his new idea into practice D. it has been controlled by computers.
