I take after my mother. From her I took over a curious nature, a sense of adventure and bright red hair. However, I did not receive a talent(才能) for 13 from her.

My mother never doubted that I would be a child Mozart. She found a strict Russian woman to be my piano teacher when I was four. I did whatever the teacher told me in order to 14 her. “Feel the music,” she always told me, I “felt” it. But what is more unpleasant than too many wrong notes played continuously? She “felt” my music, too, which is why she always left with a(an) 15 expression.

Once, in order to 16 my practice, I managed to record one of my own rehearsals(练习). I put on the tape recording and read until the tape had finished. That method worked for a week, until my mother began to 17 why I always missed the same note. She came in and found that I had fallen asleep while the tape of my performance played on and on.

Realizing I couldn’t be a Mozart, my mother told me to pick another instrument. From then on, I worked my way through several other instruments, but I still couldn’t play any of them 18 . Then my mother hit on another idea. She took me to a drama(戏剧) teacher. However, the teacher put me into painting scenery(舞台布景) instead of teaching to sing. Immediately I fell in love with this active and practical world, and I discovered that I had a skill for building and painting. I loved the 19 of taking our limited supplies and using them to make something beautiful!

The Fish I Didn’t Catch

I still remember my first fishing trip as if it were but yesterday. It was a still, sweet day of early summer. I received the first fishing pole from my uncle’s hand, and walked with him towards the 13 .

My uncle, who knew where the best hangouts of fish were, kindly placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line as I had so often seen others, and 14 eagerly for a bite. Nothing came of it. “Try again,” said my uncle. Suddenly the bait(鱼饵) went down out of sight. “Now for it,” I thought, “Here is a fish at last.”

I made a strong pull, and brought up a tangle of weeds(一团海草). Again and again I cast out my line and drew it back 15 . I looked at my uncle appealingly(可怜巴巴地). “Try once more,” he said, “We fishermen must have 16 . It took me a whole day until I got my first fish.”

Suddenly something pulled hard at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Jerking it up, I saw a big fish wriggling(扭来扭去) in the sun. “Uncle!” I cried, looking back in uncontrollable 17 , “I’ve got a fish!” “Not

I sat down on the nearest stone and 19 to be comforted. Even my uncle promised that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, put the pole again in my hands, and told me to try my luck once more.

My Understanding of Money

I used to walk around the store with my parents constantly begging for something. I remember the sight of all the colorful bags of chips and candy that I asked my parents to buy for me. I cannot remember a time when I didn't beg for something at the store.

When I was about twelve years old, my dad always 13 my begging and told me with a frustrated(使人挫败的)face, \"You can waste all the money as you want when you have a job.\" I listened, but I never really heard the 14 he was trying to get across to me. Since I wanted so many things and my parents were not going to buy them for me, I decided to make money as a 15 myself. I remember the feeling of getting new money in my pocket,

then throwing it out within the next week.

A few years later, I was a freshman in high school and did not feel like looking for a new job. One day, I saw people handing out flyers(传单)at school. I wasn't 16 at first because I thought I was fine making money by babysitting. But once I 17 thought about the money I could make, I applied to work as a lifeguard advertised on the flyer.

After a few months' training, I could finally start the job. But the more money I made, the less I wanted to spend. As the work and pay increased, so did my responsibility with money. Instead of 18 my money on useless things, I started saving up. I finally realized that money meant so much more to me because I was the one 19 for it. Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the table and count out the money Papa had brought home. Mama would carefully divide big groups for the housing, and food, and one or two coins for Nels or me — Katrin to buy notebooks.

With 13 interest we would watch the money becoming less and less. At last Papa would ask, “Is that all?” When Mama nodded, we could relax a little. For Mama would look up and smile, “It's good.” she’d say. “We do not have to go to the Bank.”

It was a wonderful thing, that bank account (银行账户) of Mama’s. We were all so proud of it. It gave us such a

warm, 14 feeling.

When finishing school Nels wanted to go on to high. “It will cost a little money,” Nels said to Mama. We gathered around the table watching a box in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank” — used for unexpected situations. Nels had it all written out. So much for what he would need. Mama looked at the 15 for a long time. Then she counted the money in the Little Bank. There wasn’t enough. “We do not,” she said to us gently, “want to have to go to the Bank.” We all 16 our heads.

Mama smiled at him. Papa said, “It's not enough.” Then he took his pipe out of his mouth. “I give up smoking,” he said. Mama 18 the table and touched Papa’s hand, but she didn’t say anything.

“I will mind the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “It's good,” Mama said.

We all felt very good. We had passed another milestone (绊脚石) without having to go downtown and draw money out of the bank.

So many things, I remember, came out of the Little Bank during the past 20 years. Even during the Strike (罢⼯) , Mama wouldn’t let us worry too much. We all worked together so that the important trip downtown could be put off.

The day the Strike was over and Papa went back to work, I saw Mama stand a little straighter, as if to get a kind out of her back.

Last year I sold my first story. I hurried to Mama’s and showed her the check. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.”

“There is no 19 ,” Mama said. “In all my life, I’ve never been inside a Bank.”

Changing Makes You More Confident

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn't like attention drawn to myself. And unless otherwise assigned (指定) a seat by the teacher, I always 13 to sit at the back of the classroom.

All this changed after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 18 and the \"moves\". Being part of a team was fun and motivating (激励, 动力). With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the process-friends who respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player. 1 never had so much fun!

From the time I was a child growing up in New Jersey, I loved spending weekends with my grandparents. I felt 13 in Granny’s small kitchen. We always had peaceful conversations, and Granny always seemed to include some wisdom with every dish she prepared.

I remember one Saturday morning. I was about 11 years old. I pushed the pieces of carrots to the side of the cutting board and went on to complain about schoolwork, friends and family. Granny took it all in, listening 17 while I talked about so many pieces of grief (伤心事) in my life.

“Tracy,” she said, “there’s nothing wrong with a little trouble in your life. Well, you know, a lot of people don’t make homemade soup these days. They say it’s too much trouble.
